	Bapatla Engineering College was established in the year 1981 by the then MP Kona Prabhakar Rao, with a total intake of 180 students in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering branches. The college was initially affiliated to Andhra University and later to Nagarjuna University from 1984 onwards. An additional section with an intake of 60 was sanctioned for the Mechanical Engineering branch in 1987. From year 1994, The College embarked on programs of expansion in terms of courses and intake, infrastructure and facilities. Presently the college offers 9 B.Tech degree courses with an intake of 630. Additional 10% intake is through lateral admission in the second year. Although the college is reputed to turn out good academic performers and high achievers, it is also known for the casteist leanings and encouragement of the same in students. This fact reflects very well in the suppression and attempt to obliterate the very names of founder members of the college including Kona Prabhakar Rao. The dominant Kamma caste members attemt to use the college infrastructure and funds for their personal gain and encourage rampant casteist politics inside the campus. <ref name="wikipedia"/>
