- History & Memorable Moments
Ewing Christian College (ECC) was established in 1902, as Allahabad Christian College on the banks of river Jamuna in Allahabad, U.P. by the American Presbyterian (AP) Mission. [1]
ECC is one of the oldest colleges established in India. In January,1843 a high school for boys was opened. When in 1846 the East India Company abandoned its school, then called a government college, it transferred its land, building and equipment to the AP Mission and for some time continued to support the school. Collegiate classes continued under the supervision of the AP Mission until the interruption of 1857, when they had to be dropped. When Allahabad University was carved out as an affiliating university in 1887 out of territorial jurisdiction of Calcutta University, Dr. Janvier, the then manager of the school, immediately initiated move to reopen the College section as the teaching college of the University. His efforts succeded and then the College section was re-opened in 1902. In 1912,when its founder principal died, it was renamed Ewing Christian College in his memory. [1]
The campus is located on the northern bank of Jamuna river near Sangam on the southern part of Allahabad City. Spread on a sprawling green campus of 42 acres (170,000 m2), the college opened its Agriculture Economics Extension Department on the other side of the river, which soon developed into Allahabad Agriculture Institute (now a deemed university). The college took giant strides in the field of higher education, with Dr. Dudgeon opening a first laboratory course in botany, laying a very strong base for research in the college. [1]
In 1903, many undergraduate offerings were initiated. However, in 1922, on the account of a new university act, the school lost its college status. In 1935, it started offering classes in a coeducational setup. In 1950, after the permission of Allahabad University, classes for degree students began and once again it acquired college status. More recently, in 1994, it achieved its autonomous status as institution in India which could offer its own examinations under the affiliation with Allahabad University. [1]
The University Grants Commission conferred on the College the status of "College with Potential for Excellence" in 2006 and from 2005, it is a constituent college of Allahabad (Central) University and has been accreditated as B++ Grade college by the National Academic Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India.
