In the end of 1975, there were five universities existed in the city of Surakarta. In order to bring the education development into the higher level, the government decided to merge these five into one. These institutions were spread over areas, they were then merged into one new location in a suburban area named Kenthingan. UNS was built on a hilly area spreading out over 60 km2. Being officially merged on March 11, 1976, it was named "Universitas Negeri Surakarta Sebelas Maret" which means "The State University of Eleventh of March". [1]
After being consolidated, the institution started to improve its infrastructural systems in 1980 .The development consisted of large improvement of basic facilities such as transportation, communications, power supplies, and buildings. However, the development was followed by development in other areas such as human resource improvement and academic mechanism. Its former name was "Universitas Negeri Surakarta Sebelas Maret" then shortened into "Universitas Sebelas Maret". [1]
In a considerably short time, UNS has had developed itself into one of well-known universities in Indonesia. Various academic facilities living infrastructures are sufficiently available. The development of courses, the improvement of human resources quality, and the advanced role of the supporting divisions has also provided significant outcome for the institutional development. The more significant success of the whole outcome has been proven by the increasing quality of the graduates indicated by the improvement of the Grade Point Average (GPA), Education Efficiency Rate (AEE), cumlaude graduates, and the reduction of study periods. Nowadays, UNS, a relatively young-growing university, has been known for its great skin surgery practice (medical faculty), the well known starbio and salt resistant rice plant from the faculty of agriculture, and some other main progresses that occur in every faculty and bureau. UNS also has made a big step in the future feature, the information technology. With its expanding network that gets bigger, Puslinet UNS (Pusat Layanan Internet UNS) has scratched a new history in UNS book of progress. Yet another history is happening right now in this growing university, and yet it is getting bigger and promising. [1]
