The school was built by the Works Progress Administration and is operated by the Kenton County School District. It opened for classes in 1936 and was dedicated by Eleanor Roosevelt. The main building is nearly identical in construction and materials to Simon Kenton High School, located in Independence, Kentucky. The school was originally to be named for Franklin D. Roosevelt. The name of the school is derived from being located directly on U.S. Route 25/U.S. Route 42, the former being popularly known as Dixie Highway.The school mascott is the Kentucky Colonel. In 2008, Dixie Heights High School was elected a "cool school" by it's students and was featured on Fox 19 News. Dixie Heights was choosen as a "cool school" based on their continued efforts to come up with new and inovative approaches to teaching core content. In 2007, Dixie Heights ranked in the top 10% of Kentucky schools in state testing. Our Mission Dixie Heights High School is a community of learners dedicated to nurturing, challenging, and motivating students to meet high expectations. Through creative and rigorous teaching, we encourage students to work toward their potential for success in the world of tomorrow. [1]

Schools of Study The Dixie Heights' Schools of Study provide the students with a sense of belonging and the opportunity to explore their interests and aptitudes while receiving a solid foundation in academics. The goals of the SOS are to open a student's mind to relevancy of academic courses and to show how high standards relate to career success. In addition to the essential academic elements, students will develop knowledge regarding careers where they may best utilize their talents and aptitudes. Additionally, students are given specific guidance planning related to post-secondary opportunities in the current job market, military, colleges, technical school, and/or a combination of these options. The four academies are designed to address the broad spectrum of student interest and career possibilities and provide transferable skills. [1]
