The precursor to AIS/D was the Dacca American Society School (DASS), founded in 1953, while Bangladesh was still East Pakistan. DASS closed during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, and AIS/D was founded in 1972. At its founding in 1972, AIS/D was housed in a single building which was located in Gulshan, serving a small population of international students in Kindergarten through Grade 8. The current school is located on a 4-acre site in Baridhara
