Philo

Philo is an unincorporated community in Mendocino County, California. It is located 5.5 miles (9 km) northwest of Boonville,[2] at an elevation of 331 feet (101 m).

Philo is located in Anderson Valley in western Mendocino County. In the 2000 census, Philo had a population of 1,098. Situated along Indian Creek as it flows into the Navarro River, Philo is the home of KZYX [3], the local public radio station. Two small specialty lumber mills in Philo are all that remains of a once vigorous timber economy in Anderson Valley. Philo is the heart of the Anderson Valley wine region. The first post office opened in 1888. The ZIP Code is 95466. The community is inside area code 707.

Two versions of how Philo was named are current: first, that its founder Cornelius Prather named it after his favorite female cousin; second, that he named it for his former home at Philo, Illinois.^[1]

-Philo (20 BCE - 50 CE), known also as Philo of Alexandria (gr.   ), Philo Judaeus, Philo Judaeus of Alexandria, Yedidia and Philo the Jew, was a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher born in Alexandria.Philo used allegory to fuse and harmonize Greek philosophy and Judaism. His method followed the practices of both Jewish exegesis and Stoic philosophy. His work was not widely accepted. "The sophists of literalness," as he calls them, "opened their eyes superciliously" when he explained to them the marvels of his exegesis. Philo's works were enthusiastically received by the Early Christians, some of whom saw in him a cryptic Christian. His concept of the Logos as God's creative principle apparently influenced early Christology. To him Logos was God's "blueprint for the world", a governing plan.Arguments have been put forth that Philo was actually the founder of Christianity by virtue of his combination of Jewish theological ideas and those present in the Greek mystery religions, a combination of which would appear much like Christianity. It is possible the followers of Jesus seized upon Philo's precepts and incorporated them into the letters that became the New Testament.The few biographical details concerning Philo are found in his own works, especially in Legatio ad Gaium ("embassy to Gaius"), and in Josephus. The only event in his life that can be determined chronologically is his participation in the embassy which the Alexandrian Jews sent to the emperor Caligula at Rome as the result of civil strife between the Alexandrian Jewish and Hellenized communities.
